Winery Overview
The property for Aadland-Moody Vineyards was purchased by Drs. Justin Moody and Kristine Aadland in 2022. Rich in history, dating back all the way back to the Beringer families, Justin and Kris are excited to be the new stewards of this incredible slice of heaven in the Spring Mountain AVA.
If you ask either of them why they have such a love for wine, they will laugh and tell you it’s because no one really likes going to the dentist, but when you are in a room with family and friends, drinking wine and enjoying the experience and story of that wine- that is magical. Making wine is a mix of farming, chemistry, art, nature and love. It is a perfect fit for two people who love to create and produce.
Aadland-Moody Vineyards will begin the production of their wines in 2023 from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes on property, tended by the vineyard manager Mario Tedeschi, with the help of the custom crush facility, Napa Wine Company, and wine maker, Bob Pepi. We look forward to the construction phase of our estate winery in the spring 2024.

Winery Overview
by Marvin Atchley

In 1968 I purchased a twenty-acre parcel that included the home grounds of the old Moding winery, barn and wine cave. At the time I was a manager in the Scientific Computer Center of a major academic research lab: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, working on the largest computers of that era.
I had been making wine for a few years in a Berkeley garage in my spare time. My wife Judith and I were attracted to the country life and decided that living at Spring Mountain would be worth the hour-and-a-half commute. We and our two daughters became the only residents in the area, which now has a dozen families.
The beauty of the 250 year old oaks and firs surrounding the old buildings seemed to outweigh the disadvantages of our site, which were limited water and a problematic vineyard site. We began clearing brush and trees in 1969, and the first rootstock was planted the next year, to be grafted with Chardonnay scion wood from Stony Hill.
Our imposing barn and winery buildings dated from the 1880s and were in remarkably good shape. But dry farming on the hillside was difficult, and after a couple of disappointing years we constructed a dam on the headwaters of Mill Creek to provide water for drip irrigation. Our small planting of Johannisberg Riesling produced excellent wine, but since the varietal was not in demand in the Napa Valley we began replanting our vineyard to Cabernet Sauvignon in 1993. The five acre vineyard now also contains 12% Merlot and 1% Petite Verdot.
Viticultural Practices
Our viticultural practices have evolved much in the last thirty years. Changes to trellising systems now provide a more efficient conversion of “sunlight into wine,” and moisture-obligate grasses planted between the rows allow us to forego cultivation and virtually eliminate soil erosion.
We have restored the Roman-style wine press, which uses the force provided by a long lever to squeeze wine from the fermented grapes, using lumber milled from old Black Oak trees near the winery building. There is a cave on the property that was dug by Chinese laborers in the 1880s and refurbished in the 1970s.
Wine from Atchley Vineyard grapes is now blended into the Vineyard 7 & 8 Cabernet.

On September 16, 2021 our father, Marvin Atchley, passed away after a short battle with lung cancer. On October 6, 2023 we sold the property to Graeme and Sarah MacDonald and their two daughters. Graeme and Sarah’s daughters are the exact same age as we were when we moved to the mountain in 1968.
In honor of our father’s legacy and history on Spring Mountain, we acknowledge his passion for the mountain, and we wish the MacDonald Family many happy and productive years ahead!

Winery Overview
It was 1983 and we were still living in San Francisco when we first discovered the Spring Mountain area. Our estate began as a parcel of 40 acres of undeveloped forest land at a 2,000 foot elevation, overlooking the Napa Valley. In the first year we had the land cleared and terraced for vineyards, and planted 6,000 Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the rocky soil.
Our original plan was to make small amounts of wine for ourselves and our friends, and in 1989 we produced the first vintage of Barnett Vineyards Spring Mountain Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, numbering 100 cases. But our vision expanded as wines from this intimate piece of land gained importance alongside other world-renowned Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons.
The Winery Today
Though dedicated to remaining an exceptional family-owned winery, we have continued to nurture the estate with passion and patience, and we have watched it grow to approximately 6,000 cases of handcrafted wines per year. We specialize in rich, elegant estate Cabernet Sauvignons from Rattlesnake Hill and the unique Spring Mountain District.
The total Barnett Cabernet production is 6,000 cases annually, and our future plans include interplanting within the Cabernet vineyard, increasing density from 9,000 to 12,000 vines. We also produce limited amounts of Merlot, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from single vineyards in other highly desirable appellations.

Winery Overview
Behrens Family Winery is a boutique winery in the truest sense. Owned by Les Behrens and Lisa Drinkward, who have made the wine under the Behrens & Hitchcock label since 1993, Behrens Family Winery produces small lot wines at its winery perched high on top of Spring Mountain in Napa Valley.
Each wine is a low tech labor of love: crushed into one-ton T-bins, punched down by hand, gently transferred to barrel, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. One only has to look at Les and Lisa’s hands during harvest to know their wines are truly “hand-crafted.”
The couple also gravitates toward small, interesting and low-yielding vineyard sites, working with growers who they know, like and trust, and who are as obsessive about quality as they are. For Les and Lisa, it’s all about letting the vineyards steal the show, and allowing the wines to speak for themselves.
It is truly about family at Behrens Family Winery. Les’ son Sean and grandson Ethan work full-time alongside Les and Lisa in all aspects of production. Business manager Schatzi Throckmorton, Director of Hospitality and Sales Robin Cooper and Administrative Assistant Connie Wilson are an integral part of our extended family.

Winery Overview
Bergman Family Vineyards was acquired by Alan and Pam Bergman in 2013; they eventually acquired a neighboring property for a total of 40 acres. Ten acres are currently planted including 8 acres to red varieties: 70% Cabernet Sauvignon (3 clones), 20% Cabernet Franc and the remainder to Merlot and Petit Verdot. Two acres are planted to a Montrachet clone of Chardonnay. The vines range in elevation from 500 to 700 feet.
The majority of the property is surrounded by the forested lands of Bothe State Park. In order to keep underbrush clear on parts of the property, goats and sheep are brought in to graze. David Abreu oversees the vineyard; existing vines were removed in 2014, rootstock was planted in 2015, grafted to the varieties in 2016 and their first tiny harvest was in 2018.
The vineyard was certified CCOF in 2016 which due to requirements of needing to certify within 30 feet surrounding the vineyard, part of their garden is also CCOF. Pam calls their slice of Spring Mountain a ‘suspended nest’ located above the Valley floor but below the upper parts of Spring Mountain.
Unique for a Mayacamas mountain vineyard is their exposure; the majority of their vineyard faces west. Parts of the vineyard are netted to keep away birds and also a resident bear. The Bergmans use a variety of methods to discourage birds from eating grapes including shiny mylar tape, speakers playing hawk calls, flying fake birds of predators and possibly in a Napa Valley “first,” the vineyard uses a device that emits a laser over the vines. The Bergmans call their vineyard Copper Hill in homage to the dark copper colored soils which dominate.
Our Wines
Production occurs inside a state of the art 7,000+ square foot winery cave that was drilled in 2020. Stainless steel tank sizes are small, ranging from several one ton portable tanks to a maximum size of 3 tons. Each tank has a dedicated pump for pump overs. Pam worked with Lejeune in Bordeaux to custom design the tanks. Sorting is an important part of their harvest operations.
Bergman produces a Chardonnay and Proprietary Red Blend.
The wines are primarily available through a waitlist on a first come first serve basis. For more information or to sign up for their waitlist, visit: www.bergmanestate.com
The winery is open only to trade visitors.

Fantesca Estate is located just a mile up Spring Mountain Road from St. Helena’s main street. Steeped in history, it was originally the dowry of Caroline Bale when she married Charles Krug in 1860. In 1889, long before women could vote in the USA, a Cabernet Sauvignon from this property, made by Hannah Weinberger, achieved one of the first awards for a wine from Napa Valley.
In keeping with the strong female heritage of the property, The Hoff’s chose the winery’s namesake… La Fantesca, who was a sexy, smart and strong-willed female character in the popular early Italian theatrical performances of Commedia dell’ Arte. Both the lover and the equal of Harlequin, Fantesca could always be counted on to woo the audience with her trademark cheek.

Winery Overview
Fe (pronounced FEE) is the atomic symbol for iron, a substance that saturates our ruddy soil. Fe occupies an elevated bench in the narrowest stretch of the Napa Valley, amid nearly two thousand acres of untamed parkland. Our vineyard is buffered by redwood, manzanita, ponderosa pine, and wild native grasses.
Our six densely planted blocks of vines are cane-pruned to create a shade canopy in the heat of summer. We plant nitrogen-fixing cover crops rather than artificially amending our soil, and we fight off pests by providing habitat for winged predators.
Our volcanically derived Aiken soil type is rich in iron, which promotes chlorophyll production and thus photosynthesis. While the surface layer is rocky and well-drained, sublayers of loam and clay hold moisture. These conditions often make for brutal, highly tannic wines, but Fe is notable for its silky finesse.

Winery Overview
Every bottle of Flying Lady is the culmination of balanced collaboration between people and place. The Flying Lady team is comprised of Founders David and Zach Nassar and Winemaker Ross Bentley. David and Zach created Flying Lady as a continuation of their sense of curiosity, exploration, and adventure. As our winemaker, Ross brings years of experience with cult brand wines and a philosophy of balance to each wine crafted at Flying Lady. Together, the Flying Lady team seeks out the best of Napa Valley and its appellations, including the Oak Knoll and Spring Mountain Districts, to create wines capable of elevating any adventure.
The Winery and Vineyard
When it comes to making exceptional wines, people represent only part of the equation. At Flying Lady, we believe that our greatest partners are the soil and vines of our vineyards. For our 2015 and 2016 releases, we utilized fruit from the L’Attitude Vineyard in Napa Valley’s Oak Knoll District to produce our single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. This rare sliver of land bordering Dry Creek sits at the base of the Mayacamas Mountain Range on the Alluvial Fan and receives the drainage of the entire Mayacamas Range. The confluence of rich soil and consistent hydration and drainage cycles delivers amazing high-quality grapes. Our York Creek Vineyard, which sits high on Spring Mountain alongside the Flying Lady Winery and Estate, and which will provide the fruit for upcoming vintages, provides vibrant and unique fruit that reflects the distinct characteristics of our home on Spring Mountain.
The Flying Lady Winery & Estate is perched atop Spring Mountain, offering unparalleled panoramic views of Napa Valley, perfectly framed by the Mayacamas and Vaca Mountain Ranges. Our 13-acre property is every bit as beautiful and elegant as the wines we strive to create. We have just completed a large renovation of the original winery and residence and are in process of constructing a new tasting room and production facility. The 15-minute drive up Spring Mountain from St. Helena is well worth the adventure and we look forward to hosting our guests very soon.

Winery Overview
by Manuel Frias
My father and I bought 100 acres of Spring Mountain property in 1978 as a family vacation retreat. We were living in San Francisco’s Mission district, which was pretty rough at the time, and I wanted a place where my four children could play and camp outdoors. This property is now known today as Frias Family Vineyard.
I had also been passionate about wine since my college days, and over the next twenty years I continued my work as an administrator at San Francisco City College. I came up to Spring Mountain on the weekends – to plant and tend vineyards, and finally to make wine. The first five acres of vineyard were planted in 1985, and our first wine was made in 1988.
Our earliest vintages were done by Merryvale Vineyards-where we did our custom crush. Our first commercial vintage was a 1991 Cabernet Sauvignon. We made wines for a few years at Rombauer Winery and then moved our modest production to Ballentine Vineyards. Todd Heth is currently making the Frias wines as of the 2004 Vintage.
We planted additional vineyards in 1998-99 and now have a total of 11 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, along with one acre each of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Most are located at about 1,000 to 1,400 feet above sea level. A year-round spring provides water for our drip irrigation and drinking.
About 90 per cent of the property is still forested with oak, madrone, manzanita, Douglas fir, redwood, and California bay. A lot of wildlife also shares the mountain with us, including turkeys, rattlesnakes, bobcats, deer, hawks and mountain lions.
I retired from San Francisco City College in 2000 to devote my full attention to wine. Since then, production has expanded to nearly 1,200 cases per year. My wife and I own the business, and two of our sons, Fernando Frias and Manny Frias, Jr., now work with us in accounting, sales and marketing.
Wine Spectator magazine awarded Frias wines 87 points for both the ‘97 and ‘98; 89 points for the ’99 and ’01 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve vintages; and 93 Points for our 2004 Estate Cabernet.
The Spectator published an article featuring the story of Frias Family Vineyard ran in the December 15, 2001 issue. Our ’01 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve just received a 94 point rating from Wine & Spirits and was voted one of the top ten wines of the year.

Winery Overview
Perry and Carolyn Butler purchased their 42 acre Spring Mountain property in 1997. Developing the vineyards in the rocky soils of Spring Mountain proved that wine was truly a labor of love. After replanting our Estate to 90% cabernet sauvignon with small amounts of merlot, cabernet franc and petit verdot, Juslyn achieved the first Estate Cabernet release of just 80 cases in 2000. In 2001, production increased to 170 cases of wine that has since displayed elegance in the style of premier cru Bordeaux.
Each Estate vintage thereafter has been more productive, and, now, 12 years of vine maturation benefits produces about 2.5 tons/acre from the 8-acre hillside vineyard. Every vintage becomes more exciting to experience firsthand the future of Juslyn right here at home.
Since then, there has been no turning back. In 2003, Stephanie DeMasi was hired and has since become Managing Partner. The team is committed to making the best wine possible from the acclaimed Spring Mountain District. Having received 95+points from accredited publications like Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate since the 2004 vintage, Juslyn is consistently a quality producer from this landmark site.
Heading up work in the vineyards is Renteria Vineyard Management, led by Salvador and Oscar Renteria, who have produced outstanding grapes for many prestigious Napa Valley vineyards. With their help, Juslyn Vineyards has been able to select the most appropriate varieties for our vineyards and consistently farm the highest quality fruit.
In the cellar, Juslyn has benefited from the experience and expertise of winemaker Craig MacLean since the very first vintage. With a Masters Degree from the University of California, Davis, Craig began his career as assistant winemaker at Markham Vineyards in 1987 before moving on to other Spring Mountain wineries, Cain and Spring Mountain Vineyards.

Winery Overview
Toward the end of the 19th century, Peter Conradi planted 100 acres of terraced vineyard near the top of Spring Mountain, and a winery was built there in 1904. The operation was forced to close by Prohibition, and the vineyards and winery fell out of use. In 1974, when Robert Keenan purchased 180 acres of forest on the site of the defunct Conradi Winery, no vines remained. Only crumbling walls and a few old tanks told its history. Yet Robert was certain that the mountain top vineyards would again be a perfect spot for an estate winery.
He started by replacing tree stumps and rocks with rows of Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and hired an engineer to design a small winery using the original stone building. The beautiful two story structure set into the hillside was completed just in time for harvest in 1977.
The winery has changed only slightly over the past decades. New stainless steel tanks and 60 gallon oak barrels now fill the cellar, and a charming antique-filled tasting room is positioned above, allowing our guests to observe the working wine cellar and smell the tantalizing scents of freshly crushed fruit or aging wines in season.
Our first, intensely flavored hillside grapes were originally used for the big “monster” wines that were so popular in the late 1970’s, but the winery has now moved toward a more elegant style by carefully managing flavors for richness and complexity. We produce nearly 10,000 cases per year. In addition to Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, Keenan also offers seasonal releases of Zinfandel, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and a proprietary red blend called Mernet.
Cheers!
Michael Keenan

Lokoya

Cabernet Sauvignon
Winery Overview
The name Lokoya honors the native Wappos who lived on Mount Veeder and the surrounding Mayacamas Mountains, on the western side of Napa Valley. The Wappos named their home Lokoya, which, as legend has it, means “the place where geese fly over.”
Lokoya produces limited quantities of appellation-specific Cabernet Sauvignon from low-vigor mountain vineyard sites in Napa Valley. By selecting only the finest vineyards and farming each parcel to accentuate its unique attributes, Lokoya produces powerful and complex wines that reflect the distinct character of each appellation in which they are grown.
The Jackson-Banke family founded Lokoya in 1995 to showcase powerful fruit from distinct Napa Valley appellations. The late winemaker Greg Upton set the wines on course before handing the reins to Marco DiGiulio in 1997. Christopher Carpenter became Lokoya’s winemaker in 2000 after working as the assistant winemaker for three years. In October 1998, Lokoya made its debut with four Cabernet Sauvignons from the 1995 vintage. Each bore a separate Napa Valley mountain appellation on its label.
Winemaker Chris Carpenter believes that the art of great winemaking is knowing when to intervene in the vineyard and the cellar, and when to leave the fruit alone so that it can express itself as naturally and eloquently as possible. Winemaking nurtures the optimal expression of the fruit, pampering ideally ripe fruit with gentle handling at every turn. Extensive sorting, native yeast fermentation, small basket pressing, and aging in small French oak barrels coax what is irreplaceable about each vineyard.
The Vineyards
Vineyards are the foundation of quality. Lokoya has located choice mountain vineyard sites within the Napa Valley appellation that yield powerful and densely flavored Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyards often cover steep slopes of rocky soil that limit vigor. Stressed vines yield as little as two tons per acre, but make up in quality what they lack in quantity.
Harnessing the concentrated fruit flavors that result from high-elevation sites with meager soils, while taming the intense tannins from these small, thick-skinned grapes, requires skill and insight.
The Spring Mountain vineyard sits at an elevation of 1,800 feet and has 24 acres planted. This patchwork vineyard site is planted meter by meter on uplifted marine sedimentary soils. A gap in the ridge allows cooling fog and air to spill over the hillsides, providing an ideal environment for Cabernet Sauvignon. This combination of exposure, soils, and climate is responsible for the red-fruited elegance of this bottling. Highly sought after by collectors, the wines of Lokoya can be enjoyed for decades to come.
The Estate
After sourcing high-quality fruit from Spring Mountain for a number of years, the family jumped on the opportunity to purchase a vineyard and winery on Spring Mountain, providing Lokoya its own home.

Marston Family Vineyard

St. Helena, CA 94574
Wine Varietals
Cabernet Sauvignon | Petite Syrah | Albion Sauvignon Blanc
Winery Overview
by Michael and Alexandra Marston
The Marston Family firmly believes that great wine is an eloquent articulation of a well-situated and fastidiously maintained vineyard. Our idea of winemaking is to interfere as little as possible, to let nature take its course, and to allow the vineyard to speak for itself.
We bought the Spring Mountain property as a consortium in 1969, at a time when some of the original vineyard from the turn of century was still in production, and the road was not even paved past the old White Sulphur Springs resort. The vineyard sits alone surrounded by canyons across from Cain and Newton vineyards, and is the most southerly located, eastern facing vineyard on Spring Mountain. Cooling breezes come through a gap every afternoon and help the grapes ripen slowly and evenly. We have records dating back to the early 1900s that show the old timers came to the area and knew it was a very good place to plant grapes.
The owner of the property before us was Al Menasco, an aviation pioneer from World War II whose flying adventures are well documented. His aeronautical memorabilia is now in the Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. Al’s best man in his last wedding, the actor Clark Gable, visited the vineyard frequently and also spent his honeymoon in what is now the main house. Neighbors recall hearing Clark and Al late at night shooting off guns and hollering after each had drunk a pint of whiskey. We still have a bullet-ridden sign attributed to them.
In the 1970’s we co-chaired with Fritz Maytag of York Creek to collect the data needed to create the Spring Mountain District Appellation, which was granted the new AVA. We made award-winning wines in the 1980s with the late Andre Tchelistcheff and Philip Togni, and in the 1990s Sean Thackrey produced legendary Petite Sirah from our vineyard which won the designation “Best Red Wine in the World.”
In the early 1990’s Beringer took us on as one of their few Private Reserve vineyards, and Bob Steinhauer personally oversaw the replanting of the vineyard to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. We now have about 40 acres planted in vineyard. Beringer makes a single vineyard designate Marston Cabernet and uses the remaining grapes in their Private Reserve.
We also choose our favorite blocks of 10 tons of grapes each year and together with winemaker Philippe Melka make a forever-limited 600 cases of Marston Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. Winemaker Philippe Melka was selected from many qualified people because he has a geology background and understands the mountain soils and fruit. He has made wine for us since 1998 and continues to produce exceptional Bordeaux-style but quintessential Cabernet Sauvignon wines.
Our Family
Our son, John, and daughter, Elizabeth, now adults and full partners in the vineyard, also have a passion for wine and understand that our philosophy is to leave the world a better place than you found it, preserve history, and that living here is a real way of life. Our family has a special interest in literature, and we believe in the old style French Salon concept of combining art, literature, good food and wine that can bring people together and promote lively and interesting discussions.
We established a 90 year generation-skipping trust that insures this property will stay in the family a very long time. We have also donated 240 acres of the original ranch to the Napa County Land Trust’s Forever Conservation Easement so that the land and its wildlife will be forever protected from development.

Paloma Vineyard
WINERY
Appointment Only
4013 Spring Mountain Rd.
St. Helena, CA 94574
Winery Overview
Paloma Vineyard has always been a family affair. Here is how my father, Jim Richards, told our story:
A view from the top
My wife, Barbara, and I bought twenty acres of undeveloped land at the top of Spring Mountain in 1983. Now the highest vineyard elevation in the Spring Mountain District (AVA), the Paloma property was a vineyard in the late 1800s, but had lain fallow for most of the last century. We planted fifteen acres of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon there between 1985 and 1988, and a small block of Syrah in 1991.
In the early years we sold our fruit to several Napa Valley wineries. Then, in 1994, we reached an agreement with our friends and neighbors, Carolyn and Jim Pride, to make Paloma Merlot for us at their winery, from a portion of our production. In 1996 we added Syrah to this program. Pride winemaker, Bob Foley, was kind enough to let me work in the cellar there with him – including an early lesson on how to connect a hose to a pump!
In 2000 Barbara and I decided it was time to make wine on our own, using all of our own grapes. We built a small winery that summer, which was completed just in time for the 2000 harvest.
The first day of crush was a nightmare – the new equipment didn’t work properly, we didn’t really know what we were doing, and by the end of the day we felt we had made a terrible mistake. But after a few hours of sleep, things looked better, and with a lot of help and advice from many different people, we completed the first crush. The following vintages were easier – even though we still have a long way to go, we keep learning and gain confidence each year.
Great Fruit Makes Great Wine
We believe that the strongest aspect of the Paloma wine program is concentrating on the vineyard, and trying to grow the best fruit possible. We pick only those areas where grapes have reached physiological maturity, returning to the vineyard ten to fifteen times over four to six weeks.
This more than anything else establishes the character of our wine. As a matter of winemaking style, we use only one-third new oak barrels for aging. This is because we ourselves do not like heavily oaked wines, and believe that there are enough people around who agree with us to support our style of winemaking.
In 2003, our son, Sheldon, joined us fulltime and our 2001 Paloma Merlot was chosen “Wine of the Year” by Wine Spectator magazine. It was a great honor that Barbara and I had hardly even imagined, but one that we will always remember.
This was only the second vintage we had managed on our own, so it felt like winning the lottery on our second try! We want to thank all of our old friends, and also the new friends we have met since we received this honor, for their continuing support of Paloma Vineyard.
In 2004 our Syrah block was so infected by eutypa that we pulled the vines and planted Cabernet Sauvignon. Our first Cab vintage was in 2008 and depending what Mother Nature provides, we release a small number of cases each year.
Sadly, my father passed in May of 2009. He is missed greatly by friends, neighbors and the wine community. He will always be remembered for the great vintage of 2001, but also for achieving the Wine Spectators TOP 100 three times in six years—2003, 2004 and 2008!
My mother died in April of 2016. Until her death we worked side-by-side in the vineyard and winery following the family tradition of carefully managing the vineyard and allowing the wine to make itself from the great fruit Paloma’s vineyards provide.

Winery Overview
Peacock Family Vineyard (not to be confused with Peacock Cellars in Arroyo Grande in California’s Central Coast) is located in the beautiful Spring Mountain District, just minutes outside of the town of St. Helena. The 6+ planted acres are located at 1,000 feet at the end of a rolling narrow windy and steep hillside road. Founders Chris and Betsy Peacock moved here in 1991 and purchased the site from the then owners of Raymond Winery. The Peacock’s initially sold the grapes to one of their Spring Mountain neighbors, Barnett Winery (who produced a Peacock Vineyard designate) but then began producing their own wine in 1999 (Cabernet Sauvignon).
Chris (died in 2023) and Betsy are very well traveled and are attracted to a variety of interests besides wine including the spiritual world (Chris went to seminary school where he graduated with a degree in divinity), travel and the arts. Chris also served in the Korean War and later started his own commercial real estate company.
Their home is built of rammed earth and is one of only several vintner homes in Napa Valley that we know of built in this style. Others included Wing Canyon before their home and winery burned down in the 2017 fires, Dyer on Diamond Mountain and the winery building for Long Meadow Ranch. This type of construction uses gravel, sand, silt and a small amount of clay rammed into extremely thick but porous walls (provides excellent insulation).
With Chris and Betsy getting up in years, their daughter Rebecca joined the team in 2013, leaving a career in the world of fashion. For 15 years Rebecca owned and operated Les Deux Copines (translates from French into English as the two girlfriends), a boutique primarily women’s apparel store in Burlingame, California which focuses on French fashion. This store is still in business but under different ownership. Rebecca is often on the road marketing the wine, attending dinners and other events.
The vineyard is perched in a stunning location on the side of a saddle which overlooks the lower part of Spring Mountain as well as onto the Napa Valley floor with views to both the north and south from the property. The vines are planted on steep hillside following the curvature of the slope – wrapping around the property with numerous exposures. Sometimes this is above the fog line and all you see from above is a white ‘pillow’ covering the valley floor. This is prime hillside vineyard real estate located next to other notable vineyards from other wineries. And remarkably, while surrounded by rugged natural hillsides, the vineyard is only located about a 10-minute drive into the town of St. Helena.
Much of the vineyard is planted to a specific clone of Cabernet Sauvignon although individual block replanting’s have introduced additional Cabernet Sauvignon clones. They also make a rare (for a Spring Mountain producer) Pinot Noir, sourced from the Russian River Valley in neighboring Sonoma County. Winery Overview
Pride Mountain Vineyards (PMV) was founded in 1990 by Jim and Carolyn Pride and since 2004 has been owned by their children Suzanne and Steve. From 2004, the winery has been run and managed by Steve Pride, CEO and general manager, who also directs the farming and co-directs winemaking with winemaker Sally Johnson.
Sally joined PMV in 2007 and is passionate about each winemaking detail, striving to make each of Pride’s 13 wines as distinctive and unique as possible. She collaborates closely with Steve in rethinking how each wine is made each vintage with the goals of maintaining the intensely-flavored wine personality that is a signature of the high-elevation property while producing wines capable of aging elegantly and beneficially for decades.
Our Vineyards
PMV owns 235 acres across the crest of the Mayacamas Mountains at 2000 feet elevation of which 85 acres are planted to vineyards. The grapevines benefit from desirable south-facing exposures, reside above the marine fog layer and experience warm mornings and cool afternoons all of which allow the vines to be physiologically active from morning to night throughout the growing season; this environment results in boldly-structured wines with concentrated flavors.
Our Wines
Pride wines have been served 32 times at the White House across four administrations. Robert Parker included Pride Mountain Vineyards as one of 22 California wineries in his book “The World’s Greatest Wine Estates”.
Our Guests
Pride is equally passionate about the guest experience at the winery. In 2013, Trip Advisor used guest reviews to name Pride Mountain Vineyards the best winery to visit in the United States. Since 2013, Pride has continued to restructure the guest experience to make each visit as friendly, fun, informative and personable as possible.
The Pride mission statement defines what the winery is all about: “To enhance the well-being and happiness of everybody we have the opportunity to interact with.

Winery Overview
School House Vineyard is nestled among the cool, lushly forested slopes of Spring Mountain, where Langtry and Spring Mountain Roads intersect, at an elevation of approximately 1500 feet. The vineyard takes its name from the 1880s one-room school house, which graced the property until it was consumed by fire in the mid 1980s.
That schoolhouse has lent its name to this fascinating and unique property, which has quietly produced very small quantities of some of the most sought after Napa Valley wines since the mid-1950s. Steeped in Napa Valley history, School House is the ultimate cult wine producer, cult before cult was cool!
In 1940, John’s father purchased the property of 160 gross acres, of which 35 acres were un-irrigated vineyard. In 1940 the only operating vineyards on Spring Mountain were Herman Hummel’s Vineyard (now York Creek), Jerry Draper’s vineyard that was originally known as La Perla and is now a part of Spring Mountain Vineyard, School House Vineyard, the Jos. Volpi Vineyard located directly above School House, and the Summit Vineyard (now Pride Mountain).
During Prohibition followed by the Great Depression many families moved away and abandoned their vineyards and prune orchards. Following the Great Depression, the farmland on Spring Mountain could be purchased for $25 per acre – top price.
Today the second generation, John M. Gantner and Nancy Walker, tackle all of the vineyard operations at School House Vineyard where they make their home. John and Nancy implement the dry-farming technique in order to intensify the character of the wines, sacrificing quantity in order to maximize quality.
Their passion for the grapes they nurture coupled with their strong connection with the land is beautifully revealed in the expressions of the wines produced from the vineyard.
Each of the School House wines is vinified in the caves of neighboring Pride Mountain Vineyards.

Winery Overview
The story of how Sherwin Family Vineyards began starts with natives of Clayton, CA, in San Francisco’s East Bay, Steve and Linda Sherwin yearned for a quieter, more relaxed setting to raise their three children. A series of weekend visits to the Napa Valley in 1996 finally uncovered a 30-acre property near the top of Spring Mountain.
The property featured a beautiful home and a serene lake, but the real prize was 2.5 acres of mixed old-vine Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. This small vineyard was in the same location that was originally part of a 500-acre estate producing sought-after grapes from the late 1800’s through Prohibition.
With a successful career in construction development behind him and a true hands-on approach, Steve began clearing and planting vineyards around the original acres virtually by himself. He planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, and finished 14 acres later.
The Wines
Sherwin Family Vineyards released their first wine, a 1996 Spring Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, in late 1999. A scant 140 cases were produced and quickly discovered by several local restaurants, retailers, and individual customers.
Marked by the firm backbone of Spring Mountain grown fruit, their Cabernet Sauvignon shows remarkable density and concentration. Produced and cellared on the property at an existing winery building, Steve employed traditional winemaking methods of fermenting in one-ton bins, along with hand punch downs and hand racking.
The Sherwin Experience
A visit to Sherwin Family Vineyards, at the top of Spring Mountain above St. Helena, is like no other tasting experience. You will be treated to world-class wines in an idyllic setting overlooking the Estate’s vineyards and picturesque lake and fountain.
Relax on the patio and sip a glass of Estate Cabernet while you enjoy a peaceful picnic on the deck. Or, on those chilly winter days, relax in front of a blazing fire in the beautifully appointed Tasting Room while enjoying Sherwin Family’s current releases. Whatever the season, your visit to Sherwin Family Vineyards will be a memorable experience that will linger, and the memory will enhance your enjoyment of the wines that you take home with you.

Winery Overview
Smith-Madrone is a small artisanal winery at the highest point in the Spring Mountain District appellation. Stuart Smith walked through a forest on top of a mountain in the Napa Valley in the fall of 1970 and the next year founded Smith-Madrone Winery, perched at elevations between 1,200 and 1,900 feet with slopes ranging in steepness of up to 35%—qualifying as textbook ‘mountain vineyards.’ Smith-Madrone enjoys dramatic views over the floor of the Napa Valley. The property neighbors Bothe State Park as well as Stony Hill, Barnett and Keenan wineries.
How it all began
While exploring the property before purchasing it, Smith discovered old grape stakes interspersed with the tall trees, evidence of a vineyard planted in the 1880s and abandoned with the onset of Prohibition. Douglas fir, Oak, Redwood and Madrone trees were cleared, and the vineyards planted. Stu’s brother Charles Smith joined the operation in 1973.
The name for the winery is both a tribute to the Smith brothers who pursued their dream and to the Madrone trees which predominate on the ranch. Unusual for North Coast viticulture at the time, the initial twenty acres were planted on their own roots. The vines flourish in vividly red and rocky volcanic soil known as Aiken loam, which is well-drained and friable.
The Vineyards today
Today the vineyard consists of thirty seven acres—9 acres of Riesling, 8 acres of Chardonnay, 14 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, 2.5 acres of Cabernet Franc and 3.5 acres of Merlot. Stuart chose specific slopes with different exposures for specific varietals: eastern exposure for the Riesling, southern and western exposures across flat stretches for the Cabernet Sauvignon; the coolest north-facing slopes for the Chardonnay.
Smith-Madrone is dry-farmed, a green-friendly practice forcing these mountain grapes to “struggle” to survive, with the vines reaching deep to search for water and nutrients, producing the precise amount of fruit exactly appropriate for their vigor, small berries with a large skin-to-juice ratio.
The cool mountain climate, coupled with the volcanic mountain soil, produces grapes of intense flavor, structure and longevity. The winery produces just under 4,000 cases a year of Chardonnay, Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Personal History
Stuart Smith and Charles Smith were born and raised in Santa Monica; today Stuart is the General Partner of the winery, acting as vineyard manager and enologist and Charles is the winemaker. Stuart’s son Sam Smith is the Assistant Winemaker. The Smiths serve as judges at wine competitions and are often sought for their expertise, whether it’s by The New York Times, National Public Radio or James Conaway for his book Napa: The Far Side of Eden. You can meet the brothers via our YouTube channel or by searching Smith-Madrone.
The Wines
Following the French domaine model, Smith-Madrone makes wine only from its own estate vineyards surrounding the winery. Stu and Charles explain that their goal is to make artisanal wines which are distinctive, an expression of both the vintage and their hand as vintners and above all else, are wines which bring pleasure to the senses.
“Every year our wine is made from the same vineyards, pruned by the same people in the same way, cultivated in exactly the same manner and harvested at similar levels of maturity, yet Mother Nature stamps each vintage with a unique set of flavors, senses and character,” they say.
Inside the winery the ‘patent’ signed by President Chester A. Arthur is proudly displayed & dated December 5, 1884, it grants title from the U.S. government to George W. Cook for the property which today is Smith-Madrone. There are numerous other intriguing historical traces on the property: Chinese workers cleared the land in the mid-nineteenth century and left behind meticulous rock piles, stone walls and underground caves. California black bears and other wildlife once thrived here; enormous 120-year-old Picholine olive trees frame a picturesque path leading through the vineyards.

Winery Overview
In the mid 1990s, Jacob E. Safra purchased four contiguous 19th century vineyards on Spring Mountain, known today as Spring Mountain Vineyards, and devoted the historic estate to making one signature wine: Elivette. He replanted the hillside vineyards to the classic red Bordeaux varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, all ideally suited to Spring Mountain. The estate’s diversity in elevation, soils and multiple microclimates provides a wealth of choices for Elivette and the other estate wines: Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
Signature characteristics of Spring Mountain Vineyard wines are concentration, pure varietal intensity, bright acidity, round tannins and, for the reds, the ability to age gracefully over time.
History
A century ago, Spring Mountain Vineyard consisted of four separate, but adjoining vineyards established by European immigrants who looked above the valley floor to the hillsides to plant their vineyards.
At the highest elevation (1600 feet) is the La Perla Winery, built in 1870, on the site where German-born Charles Lemme made history by planting the very first Cabernet vines on Spring Mountain. Just below at 1200 feet is the Beringer brothers’ original vineyard, planted in 1882. A little further down the mountain at 1000 feet is Chateau Chevalier, a vineyard planted in 1891 by French-born Fortune Chevalier. His towered stone chateau remains sturdy and strong today thanks to recent restoration. Finally, at 400 feet is Miravalle, the 1885 estate of Mexican-born Tiburcio Parrott, with its beautiful Victorian home, Eastlake horse barn, and original wine cave.
These friends and neighbors produced many wines of distinction, including award-winning ‘claret’ during the pre-Prohibition period on Spring Mountain.

Winery Overview
In the early 1940s my grandparents, Fred and Eleanor McCrea, spent their summers with friends on the top of Spring Mountain (on the property that is now Smith Madrone). In 1943, they fell in love with a 160-acre goat ranch on the rocky northeast slope down below their friends’ place. And after much hand wringing and negotiation with the sister and brother who owned the property, they purchased the land now known as Stony Hill Vineyard. In 1947, after WWII had come to an end and resources were once more available, they turned their attention to planting vines. Our first harvest was in 1952.
Our Wines
Our wines are characterized by the balance between the intensely flavored fruit from our hillside vineyards and the notable acidity that gives the wine structure. We are known primarily for our age-worthy Chardonnays and also produce limited quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Semillon and Rosé.
For over 60 years, we have had the good fortune to benefit from the rich volcanic soil, sheltered northeast exposure, naturally spring-fed earth and elevation just above the morning fog that can only come from Spring Mountain. With the mountain as our most precious resource and the expert winemaking skills originally my grandfather Fred, followed in 1973 Mike Chelini (Stony Hill’s winemaker for over 40 years and now the longest tenured winemaker anywhere in the Napa Valley!), we plan to continue the tradition for many years to come.

Winery Overview
After a measured and patient search for a vineyard property in the Napa Valley, the Steffens Family ended their quest when they acquired a forty-acre property atop Spring Mountain, now known today as Vineyard 7 & 8. Planted in the early 1980’s to eight acres of each Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, the property met the family’s stringent requirements to sustainably grow premium grapes allowing them to craft wines with a true sense of place.
Founded in 1999 and named after proprietor Launny Steffens’ life and background in the world of finance with a theme encompassed by numerics, and a keen interest in numerology — “seven” being a number of luck in western culture, while “eight” follows the meanings of prosperity and happiness in eastern culture — Vineyard 7 & 8 is the culmination of the family’s pursuit for producing fine wines including Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.
The Wines
The wines of Vineyard 7 & 8 are first and foremost a reflection of the estate vineyards. They reveal the uncompromising pursuit of Winemaker Martha McClellan and Associate Winemaker Wesley Steffens philosophy of producing exceptional, handcrafted wines through experience, passion and humility.
Sustainable Viticulture
As stewards of the land, the team believes in the practice of sustainable viticulture allowing the vineyards to tell their story each and every vintage. As a result, the wines echo a sense of the estate nestled 2020 feet above the Napa Valley floor within the Spring Mountain District.
