When was your winery founded?

“Fantesca Estate & Winery was founded by Susan and Duane Hoff. After successful careers in the corporate world, the college sweethearts decided to slow things down and raise their family in Napa Valley. They took the leap and established Fantesca on Feb. 13, 2004 — this new adventure was their Valentine’s Day gift to each other.”

Why did you choose to be in the Spring Mountain District American Viticultural Area (AVA)?

“Aware of its exceptional fruit and terroir, the Hoffs prioritized Spring Mountain when they looked to start a family project in Napa Valley. When they visited the now Fantesca property, they knew they’d found their new home.”

Who is owner? Who is winemaker? Who is vineyard manager?

“Susan and Duane Hoff are the owners of Fantesca Estate & Winery. The brilliant and immensely talented Heidi Barrett and Tony Arcudi are the winemakers and Matt Hardin Vineyard Services is the vineyard manager.”

How many acres do you farm in the Spring Mountain District AVA?

“Currently, 10 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon are farmed on the estate. Due to the position on the mountain, sun exposure, elevation variation and variety of soils, each row has its flavor profile. Winemaker Heidi Barrett loves using this fruit to make the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon as it perfectly expresses and showcases the unique Spring Mountain terroir. It’s just one of the many elements that make the property so special.”

Do you farm sustainably/organically/biodynamically?

“Fantesca is an organically certified vineyard.”

Please describe your vineyards: soil; exposure; narrow spacing; type of trellising; irrigation/dry farmed, etc.

“Because the vineyard has a variation of slopes and elevation, it sees sun exposure in different areas throughout the day. This variation also means an array of trellising methods are used.”

Wineries today try to differentiate the visitor experience. What’s unique about visiting your winery/tasting room?

“Fantesca is a working winery, which means guests get to witness how the wine is made every step of the way. Starting with a walk through the vines, a peek into the wine cave, and finishing with a tasting, this vine-to-table experience showcases Spring Mountain’s sweeping views and exceptional terroir.”

What might surprise people to learn about you/your winery/your operation?

“After 20 years, this is still a family-owned winery. This is a testament to the passionate members who continuously support the Fantesca team as they express their passion through winemaking.”

What is special about the Spring Mountain District AVA in your opinion? Is it misunderstood? What do you wish visitors knew about it which perhaps they don’t?

“Each Napa Valley appellation has its distinct terroir. Spring Mountain is unique in that it is the coldest and wettest of Napa Valley’s AVAs, which lends a unique characteristic to the wines coming from the area.”

What’s your favorite place in St. Helena to eat, drink or relax?

“You really can’t go wrong when choosing any destination in St. Helena to eat, drink, or relax, but Market and Charter Oak are particular favorites. Both establishments represent the tight-knit and friendly atmosphere of the community.”
