When was your winery founded? 

“Founded in 1977.”

Why did you choose to be in the Spring Mountain District American Viticultural Area (AVA)?

“The wines and the availability of real estate at the time.”

Who is owner? Who is winemaker? Who is vineyard manager?

“Owners are Manuel and Maria Frias and sons Fernando and Manny Jr. Todd Heth is winemaker. Mario Bazan is vineyard manager.”

How many acres do you farm in the Spring Mountain District AVA?

“10.”

Do you farm sustainably/organically/biodynamically?

“We farm sustainably and organically.”

Please describe your vineyards.

“Soil is volcanic rock, volcanic ash, clay and pumice. Exposure is morning sun and afternoon delight. Narrow spacing, 5×8. Vertical trellising. Irrigated by spring water.”

Wineries today try to differentiate the visitor experience. What’s unique about visiting your winery/tasting room?

“That we offer small-production wines that are single-vineyard hillside wines.”

What might surprise people to learn about you/your winery/your operation?

“The work never ends.”

What is special about the Spring Mountain District AVA in your opinion?

“The wines are unique and unlike anywhere in Napa Valley and the world. It is not as well known as other AVAs in Napa.”

What do you wish visitors knew about it which perhaps they don’t?

“That it’s made up of mostly boutique family-owned and -run wineries.”

What’s your favorite place in St. Helena to eat, drink or relax?

“Farmstead and Cook.”
