Our Vineyards & Wineries
Spring Mountain appellation is defined by vineyards that range from small to smaller, often hand-tilled on terraces and sloping meadows, and wineries hidden from view among dark forests and steep winding roads. Over the years, despite its limited space and remoteness, the appellation has produced an abundance of wines acclaimed worldwide for the unmistakable intense flavor and delicate, balanced tannins that are now the signature of Spring Mountain wines.

Aadland-Moody Vineyards will begin the production of their wines in 2023 from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes on property, tended by the vineyard manager Mario Tedeschi, with the help of the custom crush facility, Napa Wine Company, and wine maker, Bob Pepi. We look forward to the construction phase of our estate winery in the spring 2024.

by Marvin Atchley*
In 1968 I purchased a twenty-acre parcel that included the home grounds of the old Moding winery, barn and wine cave. At the time I was a manager in the Scientific Computer Center of a major academic research lab: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, working on the largest computers of that era.
I had been making wine for a few years in a Berkeley garage in my spare time. My wife Judith and I were attracted to the country life and decided that living at Spring Mountain would be worth the hour-and-a-half commute. We and our two daughters became the only residents in the area, which now has a dozen families.
Cabernet Sauvignon
Our small vineyard is located on the summit of Spring Mountain. Here the terrain is steep and rocky, in some places heavily forested and still wonderfully wild. An occasional bear leaves his foot prints – just to let us know…
It is a challenging place to farm but worthwhile. At two thousand feet, we are above the morning fog which often shrouds the lowlands. These heights are blessed with plentiful sunshine and warm nights as the heat rises from the valley below.
The volcanic soil together with the abundance of heat make this a unique spot for the cultivation of grapes, which, under the guidance of John and Alex Kongsgaard are transformed into this full-bodied Cabernet.

Chardonnay Merlot ReserveThough dedicated to remaining an exceptional family-owned winery, we have continued to nurture the estate with passion and patience, and we have watched it grow to approximately 6,000 cases of handcrafted wines per year. We specialize in rich, elegant estate Cabernet Sauvignons from Rattlesnake Hill and the unique Spring Mountain District.
The total Barnett Cabernet production is 6,000 cases annually, and our future plans include interplanting within the Cabernet vineyard, increasing density from 9,000 to 12,000 vines. We also produce limited amounts of Merlot, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from single vineyards in other highly desirable appellations.

Merlot Rhone-Style blendBehrens Family Winery is a boutique winery in the truest sense. Owned by Les Behrens and Lisa Drinkward, who have made the wine under the Behrens & Hitchcock label since 1993, Behrens Family Winery produces small lot wines at its winery perched high on top of Spring Mountain in Napa Valley.
Each wine is a low tech labor of love: crushed into one-ton T-bins, punched down by hand, gently transferred to barrel, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. One only has to look at Les and Lisa’s hands during harvest to know their wines are truly “hand-crafted.”
- Bergman Family VineyardsWineryTrade / Press Tastings only
Bergman Family Vineyards was acquired by Alan and Pam Bergman in 2013; they eventually acquired a neighboring property for a total of 40 acres. Ten acres are currently planted including 8 acres to red varieties: 70% Cabernet Sauvignon (3 clones), 20% Cabernet Franc, and the remainder to Merlot and Petit Verdot. Two acres are planted to a Montrachet clone of Chardonnay. The vines range in elevation from 500 to 700 feet.

Crowley Vineyards is located at the top of Spring Mountain, almost 2,000-feet above St. Helena, in Napa Valley. Joan Crowley began augmenting the soil in 2000 with biodynamic preparations, minerals, compost, and manure before planting 12 acres of 110R and 1103 Paulson rootstock. She then planted French entav clones of 337, 338, and 15 Cabernet Sauvignon, with two French entav Cabernet Franc clones, some French Syrah, and a small amount of Petit Verdot.

Steeped in history, it was originally the dowry of Caroline Bale when she married Charles Krug in 1860. In 1889, long before women could vote in the USA, a Cabernet Sauvignon from this property, made by Hannah Weinberger, achieved one of the first awards for a wine from Napa Valley.
Cabernet Sauvignon Proprietary Red Blend
Fe (pronounced FEE) is the atomic symbol for iron, a substance that saturates our ruddy soil. Fe occupies an elevated bench in the narrowest stretch of the Napa Valley, amid nearly two thousand acres of untamed parkland. Our vineyard is buffered by redwood, manzanita, ponderosa pine, and wild native grasses.
Our six densely planted blocks of vines are cane-pruned to create a shade canopy in the heat of summer. We plant nitrogen-fixing cover crops rather than artificially amending our soil, and we fight off pests by providing habitat for winged predators.

The Flying Lady team is comprised of Founders David and Zach Nassar and Winemaker Ross Bentley. David and Zach created Flying Lady as a continuation of their sense of curiosity, exploration, and adventure. As our winemaker, Ross brings years of experience with cult brand wines and a philosophy of balance to each wine crafted at Flying Lady. Together, the Flying Lady team seeks out the best of Napa Valley and its appellations, including the Oak Knoll and Spring Mountain Districts, to create wines capable of elevating any adventure.

Red Blend RoséOur earliest vintages were done by Merryvale Vineyards-where we did our custom crush. Our first commercial vintage was a 1991 Cabernet Sauvignon. We made wines for a few years at Rombauer Winery and then moved our modest production to Ballentine Vineyards. Todd Heth is currently making the Frias wines as of the 2004 Vintage.
We planted additional vineyards in 1998-99 and now have a total of 11 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, along with one acre each of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Most are located at about 1,000 to 1,400 feet above sea level. A year-round spring provides water for our drip irrigation and drinking.

Perry and Carolyn Butler purchased their 42 acre Spring Mountain property in 1997. Developing the vineyards in the rocky soils of Spring Mountain proved that wine was truly a labor of love. After replanting our Estate to 90% cabernet sauvignon with small amounts of merlot, cabernet franc and petit verdot, Juslyn achieved the first Estate Cabernet release of just 80 cases in 2000. In 2001, production increased to 170 cases of wine that has since displayed elegance in the style of premier cru Bordeaux.

In addition to Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, Keenan also offers seasonal releases of Zinfandel, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and a proprietary red blend called Mernet.

Cabernet Sauvignon Petite Syrah
Albion Sauvignon BlancThe Marston Family firmly believes that great wine is an eloquent articulation of a well-situated and fastidiously maintained vineyard. Our idea of winemaking is to interfere as little as possible, to let nature take its course, and to allow the vineyard to speak for itself.
- Paloma VineyardWinery4013 Spring Mountain Rd. St. Helena, CA 94574
Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot
We believe that the strongest aspect of the Paloma wine program is concentrating on the vineyard, and trying to grow the best fruit possible. We pick only those areas where grapes have reached physiological maturity, returning to the vineyard ten to fifteen times over four to six weeks.
This more than anything else establishes the character of our wine. As a matter of winemaking style, we use only one-third new oak barrels for aging. This is because we ourselves do not like heavily oaked wines, and believe that there are enough people around who agree with us to support our style of winemaking.

Peacock Family Vineyard is located in the beautiful Spring Mountain District, just minutes outside of the town of St. Helena. The 6+ planted acres are located at 1,000 feet at the end of a rolling narrow windy and steep hillside road. Founders Chris and Betsy Peacock moved here in 1991 and purchased the site from the then owners of Raymond Winery. The Peacock’s initially sold the grapes to one of their Spring Mountain neighbors, Barnett Winery (who produced a Peacock Vineyard designate) but then began producing their own wine in 1999 (Cabernet Sauvignon).

Pride Mountain Vineyards (PMV) was founded in 1990 by Jim and Carolyn Pride and since 2004 has been owned by their children Suzanne and Steve. From 2004, the winery has been run and managed by Steve Pride, CEO and general manager, who also directs the farming and co-directs winemaking with winemaker Sally Johnson.
Sally joined PMV in 2007 and is passionate about each winemaking detail, striving to make each of Pride’s 13 wines as distinctive and unique as possible. She collaborates closely with Steve in rethinking how each wine is made each vintage with the goals of maintaining the intensely-flavored wine personality that is a signature of the high-elevation property while producing wines capable of aging elegantly and beneficially for decades.

Ritchie Creek Vineyard is located at the top of Spring Mountain in the Napa Valley appellation’s premium Cabernet Sauvignon growing district. We produce just 800 cases of handcrafted estate wines from our small mountain vineyard, which was planted in 1967.
At 2,000 feet above sea level, our vineyard’s thin rocky soil and cool northern exposure bear low yields of two to three tons of fruit per acre, as compared to vineyards in the Napa Valley floor, which produce four to six tons per acre. Our low yielding vines produce deeply concentrated wines with intense varietal character, which have proven their great aging potential.

Their passion for the grapes they nurture coupled with their strong connection with the land is beautifully revealed in the expressions of the wines produced from the vineyard.

Syrah Sauvignon BlancA century ago, Spring Mountain Vineyard consisted of four separate, but adjoining vineyards established by European immigrants who looked above the valley floor to the hillsides to plant their vineyards.
At the highest elevation (1600 feet) is the La Perla Winery, built in 1870, on the site where German-born Charles Lemme made history by planting the very first Cabernet vines on Spring Mountain. Just below at 1200 feet is the Beringer brothers’ original vineyard, planted in 1882. A little further down the mountain at 1000 feet is Chateau Chevalier, a vineyard planted in 1891 by French-born Fortune Chevalier. His towered stone chateau remains sturdy and strong today thanks to recent restoration. Finally, at 400 feet is Miravalle, the 1885 estate of Mexican-born Tiburcio Parrott, with its beautiful Victorian home, Eastlake horse barn and original wine cave.
